Paul wanted the corinthian to be imitators of Christ, and more than once had they acted in ungodly manner. There's only so much we can do for someone stumbling in their faith. Paul might have had to resort to extreme disciplinary action which could even be excommunication.
(10) This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when i come i may not have to be harsh in my use of authority - the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not tearing you down.
After multiple disappointments, Paul was personally hurt probably because of the emotional drainage that occurs when you invest prayer for someone.
