Acts 21
13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”
This is similar to Acts 20:24. Often we'd have this sense of entitlement of whether it's ok to be lenient on ourselves if the cost of perseverance is too great. If we really wish to follow God, we must accept everything that comes with it including to hardship and suffering. This brings me back to 2016 when I had just moved to Cheil and I had experienced the most heartbreaking betrayal in my life so far. I could either turn the crowd on her protecting my pride or keep silent and seek advice from a higher up while potentially allowing her to damage my image. I was tremendously angry and scared for what this threat could hold on my future in church. After all, nobody wants to be known as a pedophilic molester. This was definitely a situation in which i did not want to glorify God and rather fight fire with fire but i'm blessed I had a mentor to guide me towards the God honoring actions.
23 so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. 24 Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law.
Like Paul, we should remain firm in Christian essentials but flexible on non-essentials so we can widen the opportunity the spread the gospel. In my personal experience, one of the most effective ways to start evangelising or having theological discussions is by offering a stranger or a friend with a cigarette. Although I don't talk to them anymore due to how many of them would stunt my growth, I could definitely see that they continued on with their day with a wider knowledge of the gospel and why it's so valuable to me and many others.
