2 Corinthians 7
2 Corinthians 7
(1) Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God
The city of Corinth was at the heart of Greek culture. To the average corinthian, participating in pagan and sexual indulgences was considered the a normal everyday practice. It is incredibly difficult for anyone young in their faith to grow in an environment that encourages you to compromise your beliefs. Paul was suggesting that they should cut off their bad habits in the hope that they should develop in their commitments.
(2) Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.
Paul wanted the Corinthians to become vulnerable to him and each other, to not close isolate themselves from their hearts. We need to show respect to our leaders and show hospitality to others especially those who might need fellowship.
(10-11) Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. see what this godly sorrow has produced in you what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. at every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
It seems that the closer we become with God, the more we seem to understand our worthlessness and decadent nature. We feel sorrow because although we know we are saved, we are aware that we in no way deserving of salvation and won't earn it by any good dead. This type of sorrow makes makes us want to serve God more out of gratitude.
